    History
    Mythologically, the name Andaman was acknowledged to be derived from Hanuman, who was known to the Malays as Handuman. Since ancient times, these islands were the home of aboriginal tribes. The tribes of, the Andaman group of islands are  mostly the Great Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas, and Sentinatese, all of Negrito origin, while the tribes of Nicobars are the Nicobarese and Shompens, both of Mongoloid stock. The first resolution by the British took place in 1789, which was later abandoned in 1796. The second settlement was essentially a penal settlement, taken up in 1858, after the First War of Independence, followed by the settlement of convicts, Moplas, some criminal tribes from Central and United Provinces, refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan, Burma and Sri Lanka as well as ex-servicemen.

    Geography
    Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India is located in the Bay of Bengal. It has about 527 islands both small and large. The coastline of the Islands extends for about 100 Kms. The Islands are covered with thick forests all around. The vicinity of the Islands is about 8,293 square kilometers. The Islands constitutes of 2 groups, the Andaman and Nicobar. These two groups are divided by about 300 Km. The capital city of this place is Port Blair. Of the total land area 92% of the land is sheltered with rain forests. Of the 527 islands, in only 38 islands we find the population. The rest of the land is desolate. Andaman and Nicobar Islands are close to the Arakanmayo mountain range of Burma which lies to the sides of Sumatra of Indonesia.     Places to visit
    29 km from Port Blair, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor envelops an area of 281.5 sq km and is made-up of open sea, creeks and 15 small and great islands. It is one of the finest in the world offering views of rare corals and underwater marine life through glass bottom boats, scuba diving and snorkeling.

    Gandhi Park at Port Blair presents amusement rides, safe water sports, nature trails around the lake, historic ruins of a Japanese Temple, garden and bunker. It had been developed in just 13 days.

    14 km from Port Blair, Sippighat Farm is a government farm extending over an area of 80 acres, where research and development programmes for cultivation of spices like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, coconut and pepper are conducted.

    25 km from Port Blair is Chidiya Tapu, the southern tip of South Andaman with lush green mangroves, multitude of birds, sylvan sands and Munda pahar beaches. One can get outstanding views of see isolated islands; submerged corals and enchanting sunset from the forest guesthouse situated on top of a hillock. 36 km from Port Blair, Collinpur has a stunning sandy beach with shallow waters suitable for swimming, sunbathing and watching sunset. 20 km ferry ride from Port Blair, Madhuban is a superb trekking area, north east of South Andaman, with peculiar endemic birds, animals, butterflies and elephants engaged in lumbering. Mt Harriet is an ideal place for bird eye's view of the outer islands and the sea. It was the summer season headquarters of the Chief Commissioner during British Raj. 365 m high, it is the highest peak in the South Andamans. Mini Zoo at Haddo housing some of the rare species of original endemic birds and animals are yet another attraction of these islands.

    The Nicobars flourish in coconut palm, casuarina and pandanus trees. The fauna of Great and Little Nicobar islands constitutes of Giant Robber Crab, long-tailed Monkeys, Nicobarese Pigeons and Megapode, a rare bird found in Great Nicobar. The Indira Point which was formerly known as Pygmallion Point, the southernmost tip of India is Great Nicobar Island. Car Nicobar, the headquarters of Nicobar District, is enveloped with cluster of coconut palms and enchanting beaches. Nicobari huts are exclusive and are built on stilts and have entrance through the floor with a wooden ladder. Katchal, a tiny island in the Nicobar group was privileged with the first sunrise of the new millennium on 1st January 2000 and has beautiful beaches at East bay, Jhula and West bay.

    A fortnight long Island Tourism Festival planned by the Andaman & Nicobar Administration annually in December to January exhibits developmental aspects of these islands. It has cultural programs and performances by artistes of national and international fame from all over India including the native tribals. Water sports competitions such as Nicobari Hodi Race, Canoe Race and Scuba Diving are arranged and the festival focuses on eco-friendly tourist destination. Block Mela yearly at Diglipur in January or February highlights the development of the rural areas and typical rural life of these islands. Science Centre in Port Blair showcases the genesis of the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago through interactive exhibits, explains the science of oceans, the flora and fauna of the islands, Fun Science gallery, Modern Technology gallery, Taramandal, the portable planetarium of this centre, and the open-air science park featuring the only in-house Butterfly corner of the islands.

    Transport and Communication
    The Island transports in the islands are well facilitated. The main mode of transport is by roads and there are also the island water transport and sometimes air transport. An area of 240 kilometers between Port Blair and Maya Bunder is covered by bus transport. In between Port Blair and Maya Bunder two islands exist and the buses and passengers are ferried by boats. The islands that need to be crossed are Baratang and Kadamtala islands. Then a city called Rangat needs to be crossed to reach the destiny. From Maya Bunder they have to adjust the busses to travel upto Kalighat, Diglipur which is the end point of Andaman.
    Speaking of Nicobar’s transport facility there is no road transport, the people have to travel by ships to reach versions islands. The travel in the ships may take from 1 to 3 days. The ships make halt in the islands such as little Andaman, car Nicobar, Nancowrie and Katchal Campbell Bay for the convenience of passenger and also unload the cargoes. The endpoint of the Nicobar Islands is Campbell Bay. In case of an urgency and an emergency, people travel through army helicopters and small flights.
    Hundreds of busses run between Port Blair and south Andaman for the ease of the passengers. Apart from the busses tourist taxis, maxi cabs and call taxis in the islands the bus service obtainable by the government are limited.
